It can be tricky for pet owners to include their dogs in active adventures especially if they are smaller breeds unable to chase after their humans for long.

But there’s hope for man’s best friend thanks to a rucksack-style carrier that enables owners to tote their pooch on their back in comfort, protecting them from difficult terrains and exhaustion.

The Ruffit Dog Carrier claims to be the first and only forward facing dog carrier backpack and allows hounds to maintain their normal sitting position while perched on their owner’s back.

To ensure pampered pooches enjoy the utmost comfort the interior is cushioned and padded side straps allow for a secure ride. Mesh side panels help keep the animal cool by allowing for maximum air flow.

The carrier – which is for dogs under 25lbs and 18 inches across the back and is priced at $99 (£81) – was invented by Jonathan Rivera, inspired by antics with his own furry friend, Mojo – a mix between a miniature schnauzer and Jack Russell Terrier.

Mr Rivera explained his motivation to create the carrier and it’s because of his dog Mojo.  He has had Mojo for over a decade and said he plays a big role in his life.

‘On one adventure (mountain biking) far from home, Mojo stepped on a broken glass bottle that left him bleeding severely, and left me with limited time, transportation or options to get him to a vet.

‘I had to pull my shirt over my head to create a “cubby” for him on my back. By some miracle, he survived.

‘This led to my “ah-ha” moment afterwards while telling the story to family and thinking of how great it would be for daily biking and activities, not just when injured and in an emergency.

‘That’s when I began my mission to reinvent the way we interact with our dogs.’
