Dinner is no longer the simple act of sitting around a table and sharing a meal together. Now dinner time involves photo shoots, check-ins, and reviewing the food you eat more than eating it. The enjoyment of sharing a meal together and having dinner table conversations is slowly becoming nonexistent in our generation. While many of us have noticed the problems of our technology obsessed society, we still fail to address the situation. The reality of it is this: we know we have a problem, but we don’t want to fix that problem. These tablets and smartphones have become the sole purpose of our existence and many of us just can’t bear to part with our beloved.
Ok. Maybe not the sole purpose of our existence, but it definitely plays a big role in our lives and it is definitely a big problem in our society. IKEA Taiwan agrees that this is a problem and it has to stop. The question is, how do you get people’s technology thirsty, social network grubbing hands off of their shiny little gadgets? International furniture retailer IKEA has always had some interesting home decor ideas, but this one is about to take the cake.
What do you do when you’re trying to get everyone to get off their phones at the dinner table and no one’s listening? Simple. Make a choice. No phones or no food. Survival skill 101. People have to eat.
This recently released Taiwan IKEA ad promotes a new kind of dining experience; an experience we actually all had but lost through the ages. This new ‘phone-less table’ features a hot plate that is generated by the smart phones placed on the sensor. The more phones added onto the sensor the higher the heat intensity. Basically, unless you want to be eating some cold hotpot, it’s time to get your friends off their phones!
It is still unknown whether or not this product will be introduced to other IKEA’s around the world, but it is definitely a product turning heads in Taiwan right now. The two minute video they created was also released right before the Lunar New Year to encourage families and friends to take advantage of the time spent with their loved ones instead of wasting their time on their phones!
