A new fly-on-the-wall reality TV show called Keeping Up With The Kattarshians featuring a gang of adorable kittens has become a surprise hit in Iceland.

The cats, from a local animal rescue shelter, live together in an over-sized dollhouse, which has been rigged with hidden cameras.

The programme was created in partnership with the Icelandic Cat Protection Society.

The kittens named Guðni, Ronja, Briet, and Stubbur have captivated an Icelandic people since the show first aired, and has already attracted the highest-ever recorded traffic to Icelandic broadcaster Nutiminn’s website.

Inga Lind Karlsdóttir said that many people were sceptical when she first put forward the idea for the show, but the viewing figures have spoken for themselves.

She has her own TV production company and decided to develop the idea after a colleague suggested making a reality television show involving cats.

‘It took about a year to put together, because we wanted all the animal welfare authorities to approve it,’ she told Broadly.

‘It’s been amazing. I thought it was a cute idea but I never thought it would go so big. It’s more than I could hope for,’ she added.

Inga puts the success of the show down to the fact that it provides escapism and offers viewers an alternative to the bad news on their television screens.

‘We like everything they do,’ she said. ‘It’s fun when they go crazy and ruin the house, but it’s also calming to watch them sleep. It’s good for the soul.

‘There’s so much bad news we read about in the media, and terrible things are happening in the world, so it’s nice to sit there and relax and watch the kittens.’

As well as providing hours of entertainment, the show has been credited with encouraging more people to adopt animals in Iceland.

All four of the kittens are soon to be adopted, and a new litter will replace them in the house.
