U.S. President Barack Obama will deliver a farewell address on Jan. 10 to reflect on his time in office and say thank you to his supporters, he said in an email statement released on Monday.
Obama, noting that the first president of the United States, George Washington, had penned a farewell address in 1796, said he would deliver his speech in his hometown of Chicago.
Thank you, President Obama!
"On Tuesday, January 10, I'll go home to Chicago to say my grateful farewell to you, even if you can't be there in person. I'm just beginning to write my remarks. But I'm thinking about them as a chance to say thank you for this amazing journey, to celebrate the ways you've changed this country for the better these past eight years, and to offer some thoughts on where we all go from here…I hope you'll join me one last time. Because for me, it's always been about you." —President Obama. Get the details on his #FarewellAddress at wh.gov/Farewell.
“I’m thinking about (the remarks) as a chance to say thank you for this amazing journey, to celebrate the ways you’ve changed this country for the better these past eight years, and to offer some thoughts on where we all go from here,” he said.
"Merry Christmas everybody!…Celebrating the holidays in the White House over these past eight years has been a true privilege. We’ve been able to welcome over half a million guests, our outstanding pastry chefs have baked 200,000 holiday cookies, and Barack has treated the American people to countless dad jokes. Although a few got a Frosty reception." —President Obama and First Lady @MichelleObama in their final holiday message at the White House. The address will be available to watch live on the White House’s website or Facebook page. The time of Obama’s farewell address has not yet been set, but the White House information page for attending the address tells attendees to arrive at McCormick Place in Chicago before 5pm CST and encourages viewers to live-tweet the speech using the hashtag #YesWeCan.
